Preserve every marking
Prefixes, suffixes, hyphens, stamped codes, labels, and color identifiers can distinguish records. Copy the marking exactly rather than shortening it to a familiar number. If no marking is visible, say so instead of assigning a likely code.
Photograph form and connections
